Flux-Free Laser Soldering Considerations

Flux-free soldering is an application-specific process consideration, not a blanket claim for every component. Surface condition, alloy, pad finish, joint geometry, component handling and acceptance criteria should be assessed through sample work.

Define the materials

The materials around the joint influence wetting and the appropriate process strategy. It is important to document pad finish, solder alloy if known and any restrictions on the assembly.

Evaluate localized heating

Laser heating can concentrate energy around the selected joint. The response of the actual part and fixture should be observed during controlled tests.

Inspect the sample

Visual appearance alone does not replace the customer’s quality requirement. A useful sample review sets out the required inspection method and the evidence expected for that application.

Avoid broad claims

The right conclusion from a sample test is specific: it explains the tested component, process conditions and observed result without presenting it as a guarantee for unrelated designs.
